TL;DR
  • Samsung’s Galaxy A72 will reportedly feature five rear cameras.
  • Mention of a 64MP sensor stands out, alongside a telephoto lens.
  • The phone is expected to make its debut early next year.

We’ve seen plenty of mid-range phones launch with triple and quad-rear cameras this year, but Samsung will apparently add even more cameras to the rumored Galaxy A72.

According to a report by The Elec (via SamMobile), the device could feature five rear cameras when it makes its debut early next year.

The phone’s penta-camera array may be headlined by a 64MP primary camera, flanked by a 12MP ultra-wide snapper, and an 8MP telephoto camera with 3x zoom. A pair of 5MP sensors for “bokeh” and macro shots round up the package. For those wondering about selfies, a 32MP shooter is said to be included upfront, too.

It’s a similar lineup used by the Galaxy A71, bar the addition of the telephoto camera. It’s unclear if the bokeh sensor planned for the A72 differs from the A71’s depth sensor in any significant way or if the rename is a marketing move.

Notably, the Galaxy A72 wouldn’t be the first phone to sport five rear cameras, but it would be the first Samsung phone with this distinction. We’ve seen this setup reserved for more premium phones from the likes of HUAWEI, Nokia, and Xiaomi in the past, but Samsung may want to continue using its Galaxy A series as a feature proving ground.

The Galaxy A80 featured the firm’s first modern flip-up camera, while the Galaxy A7 and Galaxy A9 from 2018 were the first Samsung phones to sport triple and quad camera arrays for the marque, respectively. Both arrangements have become commonplace on Samsung’s budget and flagships, too.

Samsung’s Galaxy A72 is expected to make its debut in the first half of 2021.
