TL;DR
  • Samsung has officially confirmed that two new foldables are coming on August 11.
  • The firm says we can expect increased durability for the new Z Flip and Z Fold devices.
  • Samsung’s mobile chief says it’s bringing the S Pen to foldables instead of launching a new Galaxy Note.

We already know that Samsung plans to unveil two foldable phones at its August 11 event, thanks to numerous rumors and leaks. The firm is expected to reveal the Galaxy Z Flip 3 and Galaxy Z Fold 3 on the day.

Now, Samsung mobile chief Dr. TM Roh has officially revealed that the company is indeed launching two foldable phones at the event, noting that we can expect a new Z Flip device and a new Z Fold model.

“The upcoming Galaxy Z Fold combines the very best that smartphones and tablets offer and delivers completely new ways of working, connecting and creating, while the upcoming Z Flip exhibits an even more refined style, armed with more durable, stronger materials,” the executive explained.

This isn’t the only time Roh brings up durability either, as the mobile chief mentions that its third-generation foldables will offer “enhanced durability.” For what it’s worth, Android Police writer Max Weinbach claimed that the phones are IPX8 rated for water resistance. But we hope the durability focus extends to more than just water-resistant design and focuses on the screens too.

Earlier rumors also point to the inclusion of S Pen support on the Galaxy Z Fold 3, and Roh indeed says we can expect “the first-ever S Pen designed specifically for foldable phones” at the event.

What does S Pen support for foldables mean for the Galaxy Note though? Well, Roh previously stated earlier this year that there wouldn’t be a Galaxy Note in 2021, and he seemed to reiterate this point today.

“Instead of unveiling a new Galaxy Note this time around, we will further broaden beloved Note features to more Samsung Galaxy devices.”
