Samsung's first Android Go phone may have been spotted (or has it?)

It could be your typical low-end smartphone, but we do see a possible reference to Android Go.

TL;DR
  • A Samsung smartphone has appeared on the GeekBench website, potentially being the firm’s first Android Go handset.
  • There isn’t much information to back the Android Go claim, bar one reference and entry-level specs.
  • GeekBench listings aren’t always accurate, but if true, Samsung would join Meizu as two of the latest brands to ready Android Go devices.

Phones powered by Android Go are slowly making their way around the world, bringing better performance compared to conventional entry-level handsets. It looks like Samsung might be the next company to deliver a phone in this category.

The company’s new phone, featuring the model number SM-J260G, has just hit the GeekBench benchmarking database, SamMobile reported. It’s suggested that the phone will launch as the Galaxy J2 Core. So what makes the publication think it’s an Android Go phone?

One hint is in the GeekBench sheet, which lists the motherboard field as “7570universal_go.” The “7570” seemingly refers to the Exynos 7570 processor, which is a quad-core A53 chipset. But other phones with the chipset, like the Galaxy Xcover 4 and Galaxy J5 Prime, don’t have the “go” moniker.

A look at GeekBench listings for the Nokia 1ZTE Tempo Go and Lava Z50 (being three other Android Go phones) don’t show any references to Android Go. So it’s not a sure-fire way to determine whether the phone has Google’s lightweight platform.

Faked benchmark tests are possible too, so the phone might be your typical low-end device or completely non-existent. Heck, we’ve seen GeekBench listings for a MediaTek-powered Galaxy S7 in the past, so we’d suggest you take this news with a few pinches of salt.

If confirmed, however, Samsung would join Meizu as being two of the most recent brands to join the Android Go party. The Chinese brand didn’t give many details, but confirmed it was in the works for 2018.
