Samsung Galaxy S5 and S5 Active

Almost everything you wanted to know about the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S5 Active has apparently been leaked in a handful of videos this afternoon. From a quick hands-on to some benchmarking results, get ready to watch a couple videos below.

TK Tech News brings us the footage of this ruggedized variant of the already dust and waterproof Samsung Galaxy S5. The device on display registers in as the Samsung-SM-G807A running Android 4.4.2. The benchmark tools show us a 2.46GHz processor, that’s the same Snapdragon 801 with Krait 400 CPUs. Adreno 330 GPU and 2GB of installed RAM.

Takeaways include an Antutu benchmark score of 35917 and Geekbench scores of 952 for single core performance and 2878 as a multi-core score.

In the video, the presenter is certain that the display is crisper and cleaner than the standard Galaxy S5, and speculates at a higher screen resolution, but the benchmarks show it as containing the same full HD display at 5.1-inches. The entire phone appears to be slightly larger, with a slightly larger looking top bezel, and, of course, a rubberized bumper around the device edges for added bump protection.

Aside from increased physical resistance to damage from impacts and falls, we are still wondering why Samsung is bothering with an Active version of the Galaxy S5. The main differentiator between the predecessor Galaxy S4 and Galaxy S4 Active was the waterproof IP rating of the Active device. The Galaxy S5 already comes with a respectable IP rating, providing sufficient dust and waterproofing for most ruggedized needs.

What role do you see for the Galaxy S5 Active?
