LG Display has started mass production of its new circular Plastic OLED (P-OLED) display that will be used for the LG G Watch R. The 1.3-inch diameter display is perfectly round and will allow the G Watch R to have a full watch face that has a 57 percent larger screen area when compared to similarly sized square display.

Since the new display will be used in wearables like the G Watch R then LG has managed to design it so that it is just 0.6mm thick and yet had a resolution of 320 x 320 and a a 300nit peak luminance.

One feature of wearables, especially smartwatches, is that the display needs to remain active all of the time, even when it isn’t being actively used. To that end LG designed the new display to use the least amount of power when in its Power Save Mode (PSM). This means that the screen still runs at its full resolution, even without an external power supply, by using its own integrated power circuit.

LG says that it has been able to start mass production of these displays because it developed a circular mask that enables organic materials to be deposited simultaneously, as well as a new production process that improves deposition efficiency

A closer look at the LG supplied photos gives me the impression that the image of the watch face has been superimposed onto the photos of the actual display. However it is of little consequence as LG are expected to announce the LG G Watch R sometime this week during IFA 2014. When it does we will be able to see the display in action for real!
