TL;DR
  • The Rootless Pixel Launcher is now available for download from the Google Play Store with the name Rootless Launcher.
  • The app delivers a Google Pixel like experience on phones running Android 5.0 Lollipop and up.
  • Features include adaptive icon support, the “At a glance” widget, and many more.

Popular launcher app Rootless Pixel Launcher is now available for download from the Google Play Store. The app, which was previously only available as an APK, landed in the store yesterday, bringing the stock Pixel experience to phones with Android 5.0 Lollipop and up.

The launcher has proved popular among Android fans thanks to its neat integration of features from Google’s flagship handset series. It incorporates features from Lollipop through Oreo, including the “At a glance” widget, icon shape selection, and Adaptive Icons. You can find the full list of features on the official Github page.

There are some limitations with the Google Play version of the launcher, however. To access some Pixel features, like events and traffic information in the “At a glance” widget and the Google Now feed on the leftmost home screen, you’ll have to separately install an APK called Rootless Pixel Bridge. These are optional extras, though.

As for Android 9.0 Pie highlights, you won’t find any of these in the Rootless Launcher yet and it looks like you might not in the future; the developer hinted on Reddit that adopting Pie features could be tricky.

If you’d like a taste of Pixel aesthetics without root, direct from Google Play, now’s your chance. What’s your favorite launcher? Let me know in the comments.
