I didn’t know that. It doesn’t surprise me, though. Google always does the most bizarre things. In six months it’ll probably just suddenly disappear and no explanation will be offered.

bonus question: is it actually indeed PAYING subscribers? or is it a total amount of subs on Youtube Red? As I remember, a lot of offers have passed by where people would get xx months of free Youtube Red.

The Verge’s article also mentions that YouTube Red users are 75% more likely to watch on TV. But none of youtube red’s features are useful on a tv except no ads. My family exclusively watches youtube on our Android TV or Chromecast but aren’t willing to pay $10 to get rid of 15 second ads every 10 minutes.

YouTube for Android TV is a poor app that hasn’t received a noticeable upgrade since Android TV came out. The casting experience from a mobile device hasn’t improved noticeably since Chromecast came out. If Google wants heavy users to subscribe, they need to fix the issues we have with the service.

I’d consider it if Google Play/Youtube Red offered a student discount like Spotify does. £5 a month instead of £10. But if not then i’d rather watch a few 5-30 second video clips.

I would ditch my Spotify account for Google Play and YT-Red. Unfortunately it’s not available in Europe. I don’t care much about Red’s content, but the lack of advertisements is a big plus. However, if the Sonos-integration with Spotify turns out nicely, i might consider to stick with Spotify.

So when YT is going to roll out Red to other countries?
That might be more like Mexico than US in terms of difficulty to get people to subscribe.

As a Play Music subscriber I anyways cringe at YouTube ads, knowing I could skip them entirely if they only enabled Red for the rest of us.
