TL;DR
  • Redmi could soon debut a new phone with a 120Hz display.
  • The screen will apparently support Adaptive Sync, with the ability to scale between 30Hz and 120Hz.
  •  The phones are expected to launch later this month.

Redmi could soon launch a cheap smartphone with a high-refresh rate screen. According to tipster Digital Chat Station, at least one new device bearing the Redmi Note 9 series name will sport a 120Hz display.

The display will also support Adaptive Sync, which allows it to determine the suitable refresh rate for the application. It’ll scale down to 30Hz to save power while displaying static images or boost up to 120Hz while gaming. Other refresh rates are possible in-between, including 48Hz, 50Hz, 60Hz, and 90Hz.

As for display size and resolution, the phone is said to feature a 6.67-inch 2,400 x 1,080 LCD. Although Android Authority readers may not like LCDs, it’s a fair sacrifice to make to buff refresh rates on the cheap. Per earlier rumors, at least one of the devices could also sport a 108MP camera and 33W charging, further sweetening the deal.

Finally, the leak also suggests we’ll see a 4,800mAh battery in the Redmi device too. Pair this with the Adaptive Refresh rate tech, and users could theoretically see fairly lengthy battery life stats. Whether this is true in practice, we’ll have to find out once the device makes its debut.

Although the new leak suggests the phone will be part of the Note 9 family, it’s unclear what title Redmi will actually use. The brand usually debuts two new Note iterations each year, and sticking to the Note 9 label will deviate from this tradition.

Still, three new Redmi Note 9 devices are expected to launch at some point this month. Judging by the price of the Redmi Note 9 Pro Max, we could see sub-$300 stickers on them, too.
