TL;DR
  • More evidence suggests the Redmi K40 Gaming Edition could arrive in India under a different name.
  • It may launch as the POCO F3 GT in the country.
  • POCO confirmed in a tweet that the F3 GT will be powered by the same chip, and may also feature gaming triggers.

Update: May 28, 2021 (3:30 AM ET): POCO has dropped the biggest hint that the POCO F3 GT will release in India as a rebadged Redmi K40 Gaming Edition.

In a new 30-second reel posted to Twitter, the brand teases the POCO F3 GT’s gaming triggers. It also confirms the use of MediaTek’s Dimensity 1200 SoC. Adding these details to early evidence of similar model numbers, it seems another rebrand is highly likely. We do have a long wait ahead before launch, though. POCO also confirmed the F3 GT will launch in Q3 2021.

Original article: April 28, 2021 (5:26 AM ET): Redmi’s first gaming phone made its debut in China this week with little official indication that it would be available elsewhere. Now, it seems that the phone might be coming to India under a different moniker.

Xiaomi tipster Kasper Skrzypek uncovered new evidence that the Redmi K40 Gaming Edition may be launched in India as a POCO device. The phone may feature the name POCO F3 GT, as the two devices seemingly share the same core model number.

This doesn’t come as a huge surprise, either. Tipsters Digital Chat Station and The_Tech_Guy joined dots linking the Redmi K40 Gaming Edition to a new POCO F model. An FCC listing from March also suggested that the standard Redmi K40 would launch as a POCO phone globally.

POCO F3 GT: Potential specs

If Xiaomi is planning to launch the phone as a POCO in India, it may be one of the more interesting rebrands of late. The K40 Gaming Edition features a Dimensity 1200 SoC, up to 12GB of RAM, a 5,065mAh battery, and a 6.67-inch 120Hz OLED panel. It’s unclear if the K40 Gaming Edition’s key physical design elements — like the pop-up trigger buttons, LED notification lights, and JBL stereo speakers — will also make the cut.

There’s no word on when the POCO F3 GT may arrive in India, but don’t expect it any time soon. The Redmi K40 Gaming Edition goes on sale later this month in China.
