After plenty of leaks and rumors, the red version of the Nexus 5 arrived to the Google Play store last week, timed perfectly for Valentine’s Day. As to be expected, there was plenty of demand for the fetching red model and over the weekend the handset’s status shifted from in stock to “We are out of Inventory” for both 16 and 32GB variants (at least in the U.S. market).
Of course, we’ve seen this before with the Play store: something will change to “out of stock”, and then hours or days later it will return with a shipping time that has slipped further and further away. Still, so far, the “check back soon” status remains in effect, and has us wondering if maybe the red version was truly a limited edition model that Google doesn’t plan to keep around long-term.
At least for now, it appears that if you were planning on picking up the red Nexus 5, you might have missed the boat. Then again, perhaps this is just a minor hiccup and more inventory is on the way. Either way, considering the apparent success of the red Nexus 5, it’s possible that Google will eventually bring us more colors down the road — even if the red model is indeed over and done with.
Did you manage to get your hands on the red Nexus 5? Would you like to see Google introduce more color variants in the future, or does such a move only serve to frustrate existing Nexus owners? Let us know what you think in the comments.
