realme launched the first GT series phone in mid-2021, bringing a more affordable flagship experience to the table. We’ve seen a few more variants since then, such as the upper mid-range GT Neo series. But the firm has indeed delivered new models in the realme GT 2 and realme GT 2 Pro.

realme GT 2 Pro: An eclectic camera setup

The Pro model was previously teased as the brand’s first premium flagship, but the company has since said that this is the firm’s “most premium” flagship instead. It’s definitely a high-end experience when you look at the core specs, featuring a Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 SoC, 6.7-inch QHD+ 120Hz OLED screen (LTPO 2.0, 3,216 x 1,440), and a 5,000mAh battery with 65W wired charging.

Moving to photography, the phone is equipped with a 50MP IMX766 main camera (with optical image stabilization), a 50MP ultrawide camera (Samsung JN1), and a 40X microlens.

The 50MP ultrawide shooter is pretty impressive on paper, featuring a 150-degree field-of-view that’s significantly wider than other ultrawide cameras on the market. It also packs a fisheye mode so you can shoot action cam-style footage. Check out the image below for an idea of how wide the camera can go.

Furthermore, the microlens seems to fulfill a similar role as the OPPO Find X3 Pro‘s 3MP micro camera, allowing you to take microscope-style shots. There’s no word on the microscope camera’s resolution, although a previous leak has pointed to a 2MP resolution. We thought the OPPO phone’s 3MP resolution was too low for wallpapers and the like, so we aren’t expecting improved results here.

There’s no telephoto or periscope camera here though, which is a bit of a shame and means the phone will be forced to rely on digital zoom and other software tricks for zoomed-in images.

Other notable specs include a 32MP selfie camera, stereo speakers, an improved antenna array for better reception and NFC range, and realme UI 3.0 atop Android 12.

The Pro model is available in Paper White, Paper Green, Steel Black, and Titanium Blue. The Paper variants make use of a “bio-based polymer design” inspired by paper art.

realme GT 2: An iterative upgrade?

The Chinese manufacturer also announced the realme GT 2, and a closer look reveals a phone that has precious few upgrades over its predecessor. For one, the battery has received a welcome bump from 4,500mAh to 5,000mAh capacity. Then there’s the switch from an older 64MP camera to the more capable 50MP IMX766 primary camera.

Otherwise, you’ve still got a Snapdragon 888 SoC here, an 8MP ultrawide lens, and a 2MP depth sensor. Other familiar features include 65W wired charging, an FHD+ 120Hz OLED panel, and realme UI 3.0 atop Android 12.

realme GT 2 series pricing and availability

The phones are only available in mainland China right now, with no word on whether we’ll see these devices come to global markets. Nevertheless, you’ll be paying an early bird starting price of 2,599 yuan (~$409) for the realme GT 2 and 3,699 yuan (~$582) for the realme GT 2 Pro. These phones will otherwise start at 2,699 yuan (~$425) and 3,899 yuan (~$614) respectively.
