Original post (1/6): With season 3 of Rick and Morty still eons away (the rumor mill estimates March 2017… ouch), fans of the irreverent sci-fi comedy have been starving for any new content involving their favorite characters. Now the wait for the next season might be a little bit easier, because Adult Swim has announced that Pocket Mortys will be hitting Android and iOS devices late next week.

This isn’t the franchise’s first foray into mobile gaming. Their previous creation was a deliberately banal “balloon-popping simulator” called Jerry’s Game. Now, however, it looks like co-creators Dan Harmon and Justin Roiland are going to really show us what they’ve got on the mobile platform with a much more fleshed-out game.

Pocket Mortys appears to be an affectionate parody of Pokemon. The player controls Rick as he pits his Morty against the Mortys of others. Adult Swim’s announcement came with a brief video showcasing the Pokemon-esque gameplay mechanics and giving us a teaser of the kind of dialogue and adventuring we can expect. They also confirmed that the game will be free to play.

Both Justin Roiland and Dan Harmon sprang to Twitter with their own teasers. Harmon, who provided voice acting for Pocket Mortys, joked that the game will contain $90 in-app purchases that will be required to keep your Morty alive. Pocket Mortys will be available in the Google Play Store and the App Store starting Thursday, January 14.
