google play newsstand

Following Play Movies and Keep, Google is pushing out another update as part of its traditional Wednesday rollout, and this time it’s Play Newsstand in the spotlight.

The update to version 3.2 brings a few small changes to the user interface of the news and magazine reading app, most notably a brand new categories bar that simplifies exploration of general topics like Technology or Entertainment.

Before the update, swiping right and left would take you from the Read Now section to My Library, Bookmarks, and Explore. Now swiping in Read Now lets you navigate through the topic mentioned above, while My Library, Bookmarks, and Explore remain available from the slide out menu. The header of each topic has a different color and the topic bar slides away when you scroll down. The abundance of colors can be a bit disconcerting, but Google seems to be moving towards using more bright colors across its apps, as suggested by the Keep update and the leaked Gmail interface.

One other change is the unification of My Magazines and My News into one category, My Library. That’s about it – the other sections of Play Newsstand remain unchanged as far as we can tell.

While Google hasn’t yet updated the changelog for Play Newsstand, rest assured that the update is heading your way as we speak. Check Newsstand out in the Play Store.
