Sphero

It has been nearly two years since Orbotix’s unique robotic ball first arrived to the market. In that time, the Sphero has developed a modest following and has even spawned an impressive collection of apps optimized to work with the device.

Still, two years is forever in the world of tech, making the Sphero long overdue for an upgrade. Today Orbotix finally took the wraps off the Sphero 2.0, building on the feature set of the original, while adding quite a few improvements along the way.

Not only is Sphero 2.0 three times brighter than the original, its highly optimized sensors make controlling the device easier and more accurate versus the Sphero 1.0. Orbotix has even designed a special accessory called “Nubby”, which allows the ball to easily travel over difficult terrain. The accessory makes the Sphero completely waterproof as well.

Have a need for speed? Sphero 2.0 is capable of traveling about 7ft per second – nearly double the speed over the original. The robotic ball also includes a set of ramps, as seen in the video below.

Excited yet? You should be! There is a ton of potential when it comes to utilizing the Sphero 2.0, and the overall improvements could open to door to better apps than seen with the first-gen robo-ball.

While not dirt-cheap, the Sphero 2.0 is still reasonably affordable, with a pre-order price of $129.99. The Sphero 2.0 works with any Android 2.2 device using Bluetooth technology, and will ship out on September 3rd.

So what do you think, excited to get your hands on the next-gen Sphero, or not?
