Demand for the OnePlus One remains high, but availability is still restricted in many regions. In an effort to branch out into the growing Indian smartphone market, OnePlus is looking for an e-commerce partner in the region.

OnePlus is currently in talks with three leading e-commerce businesses in India, and hopes to finalize its partner later this week. India is one of the fastest growing markets for smartphone sales and several retailers, such as Motorola and Xiaomi, have found success selling handsets exclusively through local e-commerce retailers.

“India is a super hot market with rapid data growth and this is the right time to enter the market. We are talking to all three leading e-commerce players in India to start our operations … We hope to finalise our partner this week.“ Carl Pei, director of OnePlus

Pei outlined that any sales in India would not follow the same controversial invite system currently used for the rest of the world. The company would instead revert to a more traditional pre-order system, followed by open online sales. The company will introduce the 64 GB version of the OnePlus One to India first, followed by the 16GB memory variant.

“We are selling our device in 17 countries without any support, but India will be the first country to have a dedicated team outside China,”

Prices in India are expected to fall in the region of Rs. 20,000, although the final price tag has not been fixed. This will put the OnePlus in direct competition with a similarly priced Xiaomi flagship, the Mi4. It will be interesting to see how well the OnePlus One competes against other ultra-competitively priced smartphones.

OnePlus is in the process of building a dedicated team to manage operations in India, suggesting that plans are almost finalized. We should see an official announcement on an Indian launch in the coming weeks.
