OnePlus has shared that it will introduce an updated USB Type-C variant of its existing OnePlus Bullets V2 earphones. The earphones will be launched alongside the company’s next device – expected to be called the OnePlus 6T – in the coming quarter.

While this is a clear indication of the retirement of the headphone jack by OnePlus, OnePlus co-founder Carl Pei too confirmed that the upcoming device will ditch the 3.5mm audio jack.

In its press note unveiling the Type-C Bullets, OnePlus quotes its survey to specify that while in early 2017, 80% of users used in-jack headphones regularly, that number dropped drastically in 2018 with 59% of users switching to wireless headsets. Clearly, an attempt to preemptively offer an explanation for the decision that will ignite a lot of debate.

It is interesting that last year, OnePlus’ CEO Pete Lau assured the community on the company’s official forums that the 3.5mm headphone jack was an essential part of offering the “best flagship experience possible” for the OnePlus 5T.

The new Type-C Bullets will be based on delivering a superior soundscape and will be a step up from Bullets V2 while sporting a similar metal design.

The Type-C Bullets will be priced the same as the existing Bullets V2 – $19.99 in the US, £15.99 in the UK, and ₹1,490 in India – and will be available across online and offline channels.
