Samsung Electronics and Nike have partnered up to introduce the Nike+ Running App for the Samsung Gear S, the curved AMOLED display smartwatch that Samsung announced just yesterday. The app offers up all the functionality that Nike FuelBand and other fitness tracker wearers have become accustomed to, and a few new tricks of its own.
Importantly for joggers out there, the app runs independently of any connected handset, meaning that you won’t have to run around with your phone in your pocket. The Nike+ Running App makes use of the Gear S’ built in GPS to collect distance data and speed, whilst also allowing the wearer to confirm their route. Runners can check their distance, pace, and heart rate from the smartwatch, without the need for a companion smartphone app.
“Nike+ Running has changed the way people experience sports. It motivates runners to run further, faster and more often by tracking their activity, celebrating their progress, enlisting personalized coaching, challenging their friends and sharing runs with their entire social network,” – Adam Roth, VP of Nike Global Running Brand Marketing
Nike has packed in a few other features too. Using the Gear S’ 3G connection, wearers can connect to their friends through Facebook and the Nike+ Running community on the move. The app integrates with Nike+ Challenges, allowing users to receive cheers from their friends, send photos over social media, and receive audio feedback. The Nike+ Coach feature also offers up training programs to help keep runners fit and healthy. To top it off, the app comes with a built-in music player for your motivational workout tunes.
It’s certainly a good sign to see apps already making use of SIM card powered smartwatches. Perhaps there really is something to autonomous wearables?[press]
