Nexus 7 sold out at GameStop, Staples and Sam’s Club on first day

July 14, 2012

Announced in late June at Google I/O 2012, and available for pre-order ever since in select countries – both from Google and other third-party retailers – the Nexus 7 finally started shipping yesterday. At the same time, Google authorized its retail partners to start selling the tablet in their stores, with companies like GameStop, Staples, Sam’s Club or Office Depot having already received Nexus 7 stock.

Reuters reported on Friday afternoon that the Google tablet sold out with various U.S. retailers including GameStop, Staples, Sam’s Club, while Office Depot “continued to offer the device for sale as of the afternoon.”

GameStop went on record to say that it has already sold out its initial allotments and that it will receive more Nexus 7 units only next month:

“We blew through the first two allotments,” a GameStop spokesperson said.
A third allotment of preorders will be available in August. The game retailer declined to share exact number of preorders.

Google did not mention how many tablets it sold since it started taking pre-orders, but Hugo Barra did say at Google I/O that the first day pre-order number was “big,” while Eric Schmidt on Thursday revealed to reporters that “there was ‘immense demand’ for the Nexus 7 in the first week after it was introduced.”

The Search giant isn’t saying that its tablet has sold out already, but shipping time on Google Play is at 1-2 weeks for the 8GB version and 2-3 weeks for the 16GB version.
