Newstand gets a Material Design makeover, improved magazine reading experience too

A new update for Newstand has now arrived bringing material design changes as well as an improved magazine reading experience.
October 2, 2014

Nearly a year ago we waved goodbye to Play Magazines and said hello to the Newstand experience. Today we are seeing the biggest transition since the app’s rebranding, thanks to a pretty impressive update that is rolling out starting today. The new update introduces Google’s Material Design language to the app, which means bigger images, smoother transitions and more contextual headers.

While the cosmetic changes here make for pretty big news as it is, Google doesn’t stop there. The update now includes an improved system for reading magazines, which should especially be useful for smartphone users. No longer will you have to zoom in and out of an article just to read it, instead a list of articles from a magazine will be presented and you can simply “toggle through and easily read with big images right on your phone.”

Last but not least, Google also is adding deeper topic cards in the Explore section, things like Star Wars, Game of Thrones, etc. As Google puts it, “Topics deliver a personalized and up to date reading experience on your passions and interests.”

As to be expected from most Google apps, it could take a few days before Newstand’s update arrives to Google Play. For those that don’t like waiting, you can download and manually install the APK via GAPPS Early.
