TL;DR
  • Some of the new Google Photos features announced at Google I/O 2018 are rolling out now.
  • “Color Pop” turns a background black-and-white while keeping the subject in color.
  • The features are rolling out slowly, so you may or may not see the updates today.

At Google I/O 2018, Google Photos got some stage time during the keynote. Google announced some new AI features that would be coming to Google Photos, like a one-click editing process, the colorization of black-and-white photos, and a new feature called “Color Pop” that makes a background black-and-white while leaving the photo’s subject in color.

It looks like at least some of those features are rolling out now. A user on Reddit posted a photo they took that Google “color popped” for them. The image is below; however, the user did not post what the original, pre-color popped image looked like:

The image is cool, but I updated my Google Photos app just now and did not find the Color Pop feature. With that being said, your mileage may vary as far as getting the new feature today or this weekend.

If you absolutely cannot wait to try out Color Pop, you can sideload the latest Google Photos update from APK Mirror. If you need help sideloading apps, you can read this tutorial on the process here.

Google did say that some of the features – specifically the black-and-white colorization feature – would come to Google Photos in a few months. It’s unlikely that today’s update has that feature. However, you can sideload the update and explore to see what features are new.

If you don’t use Google Photos, what are you waiting for? You get all the free storage you could ever want, a nifty automatic organization feature, and these new editing tools that are rolling out. You can download Google Photos by clicking the box below.
