AT&T and Verizon make substantial gains in Netflix speed rankings
In the last few months, AT&T, Verizon and Time Warner Cable have signed interconnection deals with Netflix. Starting last month, all three interconnection deals were supposed to be in full effect. Now, all three companies are seeing significant gains in the latest Netflix speed rankings.
“AT&T U-Verse led the way, with its speed jumping more than one Megabit per second (Mbps) to 2.61 from 1.44 over last month and rising seven spots in the US speed index to No. 7,” notes Netflix. “Verizon FiOS speeds increased to 2.41 Mbps from 1.61, and Time Warner Cable rose to 2.59 this month from 2.16 in July. These dramatic increases pushed the U.S. average speed to 2.57 in August, now ranking 11th among the countries we track — ahead of Brazil and Chile.” – Netflix
Netflix continues to argue that these interconnection deals should not be allowed but also has agreed to such deals so that Netflix subscribers can benefit in the short-term.
The Netflix ISP Speed Index is based on data from the more than 50 million Netflix members worldwide who view over 1 billion hours of TV shows and movies streaming from Netflix each month.
