TL;DR
  • MediaTek has announced the Dimensity 700 5G processor.
  • The new chipset is expected to target budget 5G phones.
  • The firm also announced two new Chromebook chipsets.

MediaTek has delivered a slew of 5G chipsets in 2020, including a cost-effective Dimensity 720 processor used in a variety of budget 5G phones. The company isn’t stopping here either, as it’s just announced the Dimensity 700 SoC.

Much like the previous processor, the MediaTek Dimensity 700 is built on a 7nm process and serves up an octa-core design. More specifically, you’re looking at two Cortex-A76 CPU cores clocked at 2.2Ghz and six Cortex-A55 cores.

The new chipset also sports Arm’s Mali-G57 MC2 GPU, which suggests modest graphical performance. In fact, this seems to be the same GPU and core-count as the firm’s budget Helio G80 processor.

The firm is also touting 5G downlink speeds of up to 2.77Gbps and 2CC carrier aggregation via the integrated 5G modem as well as its UltraSave technology suite for improved efficiency. Furthermore, the Dimensity 700 packs dual SIM 5G support as well, allowing you to use two 5G networks on one phone.

MediaTek is also touting several camera features, including 48MP or 64MP single camera support with “AI-bokeh, AI-color and AI-beauty” features, and multi-frame noise reduction. Other noteworthy features include 90Hz refresh rate support, FHD+ support, LPDDR4X support (no LPDDR5 here), and multiple voice assistant support.

All in all, it definitely looks like a Dimensity 720 variant rather than a brand-new design, with dual SIM 5G and a slightly higher CPU clock speed ostensibly being the only major upgrades.

MediaTek confirmed that the first phones with the new chipset will launch in Q1 2021. The chipmaker also suggested that phones with the chipset could be priced at $250 and lower.

The company also teased a follow-up to the Dimensity 1000 series, noting that this chipset will be revealed later this year. MediaTek also confirmed that it would offer the Cortex-A78 CPU, 3Ghz clock speed, and 6nm manufacturing process.

New Chromebook chips too

This wasn’t the only announcement MediaTek had to share either, as it announced two new Chromebook chips as well. The MT8195 is clearly the more impressive processor and makes for a massive upgrade from chips like the MT8183 seen in recent Chromebooks like the Lenovo Chromebook Duet.

The MT8195 is built on a 6nm process and is equipped with an octa-core CPU, featuring four brand-new Cortex-A78 CPU cores and four Cortex-A55 cores. This is in stark contrast to the firm’s previous MT8183, which offered four aging Cortex-A73 cores and four Cortex-A53 cores.

You can also expect the Mali G57 MP5 GPU, APU 3.0 machine learning silicon (featuring four TOPS of performance), AV1 codec support, and the ability to output to three simultaneous displays.

Meanwhile, the 7nm MT8192 is not quite as cutting-edge as the MT8195, but still sports an octa-core design (4x Cortex-A76 and 4x Cortex-A55), Mali-G57 MP5 graphics, and APU 2.0 silicon (2.4 TOPS). Other notable features include WQHD display support at 60Hz, FHD+ support at 120Hz, and the ability to output to two displays simultaneously.

Chromebooks powered by the MT8192 will land in Q2 2021, MediaTek notes. Meanwhile, the Taiwanese firm says devices powered by the MT8195 will be available at a “later date.”
