Sony Ericsson

Sony Ericsson

I really liked Sony Ericsson. Before the advent of Android and the popularity of RIM and the iPhone, I strongly believed their devices were innovative, original and easy to use. The k750i was a milestone in achievement.

However, of late their phones have been good natured but ultimately underwhelming devices that try to be original and fail to pull it off well. Furthermore, the way in which SE consistently fail to prevent rumours and then fail to bring a prototype to market for the better part of a year, is very tiresome. In fact, for me this was one of the single most important reasons why the Android based Xperia X10 failed to make waves. It was too late. The fuss was had 4 months before its release.

Sure, it didn’t help that it was plagued with issues in its own right, but HTC had already surpassed it and this was largely due to Sony Ericsson telling everyone their game plan and then finding themselves outmaneuvered before they can launch. Indeed, it helped that the HTC phones have been pretty much spot on.

Well now we have some images of two leaked Sony Ericsson devices. The giant is hoping to reuse Android and include it onto an Xperia frame and a 5″ slider phone that looks like the HTC Shift. Checking the picture to the right, the device on the left-hand-side of this picture is known as ‘Shakira’, and is alleged to be somewhere between the Xperia X10 and the X10 mini. We don’t even know the codename of the device on the right-hand-side (fill us in if you know!), but we do like this form factor. We’ve heard that this device will run Android 2.1. By the time this device releases, we’re confident that Android 2.3 will be up for release in a matter of months, if not weeks. Don’t hold you’re breath over these two. It’s likely to be a long wait before we see anything. When we do, it could be slow and buggy.
