Is Warner Bros planning a fast 45-day HBO Max drop for Black Adam?
In late 2020, at the height of the Covid-19 pandemic, Warner Bros decided to offer all of its major theatrical films from that time period to the end of 2021 in not only any open movie theaters but also on its HBO Max streaming service for 30 days. The final results of this plan were mixed; some movies did decently in both movie theaters and on HBO Max (Mortal Kombat, Godzilla vs Kong, Dune), while others were bombs on both platforms.
In 2022, Warner Bros announced that its day-and-date experiment had ended, thanks to most movie theaters being back in operation. However, its new theatrical films would quickly debut on HBO Max just 45 days after their release in movie theaters. That was how the releases for The Batman and Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore were handled. Since then, the studio has shifted its movie and streaming release plans once again. It now says that its HBO Max release date plans for its new movies will be handled on a case-by-case basis. Thus, the release of its biopic Elvis made it to theaters June 23, but it debuted on HBO Max over two months later, on September 2.
So if you are wondering if Black Adam will get a quick 45-day turnaround to streaming, the answer to that question is, sadly, “No”. Black Adam is just too big of a box office hit for Warner Bros to fast-track its HBO Max release.
When will Black Adam drop on HBO Max?
While the movie may not follow the previous plan of the 45-day period from launching in theaters to debuting on HBO Max, we suspect that the film could still show up on the service just in time for Christmas 2022. That would still be just over two months between movie theaters and streaming, similar to the release of Elvis. It could also help to boost HBO Max’s subscriber numbers for the end of 2022 by having a big DC Comics superhero film show up for streaming. It’s also likely that the movie will be available in 4K HDR resolution for big-screen TVs that support those features.
