It looks like HUAWEI is going to embrace the notch with its next smartphone

We don't know what the smartphone is called, or what silicon it will be powered by, but evidence points to it being the HUAWEI P11.

I mind the notch on the iPhone X, but not on the Essential Phone. It’s a bit weird, I know, but I can’t help but stare at that abyss that makes the front of the iPhone X look like Ben Affleck’s Batman. That’s why I don’t know what to think about Huawei possible implementing a notch for one of its upcoming smartphones.

The folks over at XDA Developers took a look at some firmware files acquired by FunkyHuawei and re-created an overlay image that was found in the files. The image shows a notch that looks to be a cross between the iPhone X’s and the Essential Phones’ notches, and we can assume it will be home to the front-facing camera, earpiece, and additional hardware.

Interestingly, the files also pointed to a discrepancy in the device’s screen resolution. Even though a configuration file revealed that the HUAWEI device sports a 6.01-inch 2,160 x 1,080 LCD display, other files indicate the same-sized screen with a 2,244 x 1,080 resolution. That discrepancy might have something to do with the notch, with the higher resolution likely reserved for apps that take advantage of the space above the status bar.

As for what device this could be, evidence like its likely unveiling during next year’s Mobile World Congress, its Kirin 970 chipset and slightly upgraded version of EMUI, and “EMILY” codename points to it being the P11. Of course, this is more correlation than anything else, since HUAWEI hasn’t exactly come out and said anything about the P11, but the phone is at least flagship-level.

The HUAWEI P11 might come with a 40 MP rear camera and 24 MP front camera

We’ll find out if this unknown device really is the P11 once February rolls around, but don’t forget the busy week that HUAWEI already had. Keep in mind that the company already announced the Nova 2S, HONOR 7X, and HONOR View 10, and it’s not even Friday yet.
