If you are a proud HTC Hero owner, then you may have been looking at the newer Android devices running Android 2.0 or 2.1 with a little disdain. We say ‘may’ because if you have the technological know how, it is possible to gain root access to your HTC Hero and install a leaked ROM in place of the original firmware that ships on the device. Obviously this is not everyone’s cup or tea so here is the good news.

According to HTC’s Benelux team and a press release, we can expect to see a legitimate upgrade to Android 2.x for HTC’s Hero in “mid March”. Furthermore, it will also come with a few new widgets, including Friend Stream. This application cumulates user updates from across many different services. This is very similar to what Motorola do with Motoblur.

We cannot be sure when all regions sporting the HTC Hero will receive this update, but for now those residing in Belgium, the Netherlands, or Luxembourg and own a HTC Hero really do have something to look forward to.
