HTC's mobile efforts in 2018 haven't impressed. The Desire 12s and its low price tag could change that.

HTC might be reeling on the financial front, but that’s not stopping the company from announcing the Desire 12s.

The newest entry to HTC’s Desire line-up, the Desire 12s features a 5.7-inch display with an HD+ (1,440 x 720) resolution and no notch. Above the display sits a 13-megapixel camera with f/2.4 aperture and an LED flash module.

Around back is a fingerprint sensor and 13MP camera with f/2.2 aperture. Because the LED flash is to the left of the camera and occupies the same space, the rear camera system is strangely asymmetrical.

At least the two-toned finish looks really nice, and reminds us of the recently released Desire 12 Life. The Desire 12s comes in Black, Silver, and Red. All three color options feature a striped finish below the fingerprint sensor that might allow for extra grip.

Elsewhere, the Desire 12s features Qualcomm’s octa-core Snapdragon 435 processor, 3GB or 4GB of RAM, 32GB or 64GB of expandable storage, and a 3,075mAh battery. The phone sadly runs Android 8.1 Oreo with HTC’s Sense UI overlay. Here’s hoping that an update to Android 9 Pie is in the works.

The 3GB/32GB version of the Desire 12s costs 5,990 New Taiwan dollars (~$194), while the 4GB/64GB variant goes for 6,990 New Taiwan dollars (~$227). No word yet on whether the Desire 12s will be available outside of Taiwan.
