If you’re moving too far way, aiming to exercise at home, or things like the “lunk” alarm are preventing you from doing serious weightlifting, it’s time to leave Planet Fitness. There are a couple of ways to cancel — and unfortunately, neither of them are that convenient.

QUICK ANSWER

The only way to cancel a Planet Fitness membership is to talk to the front desk at your home gym, or send a letter request to that gym with your name, address, phone number, and membership number.

Can I cancel my Planet Fitness membership online or in the app?

No. Presumably, this is way of deterring impulse cancellations.

While Planet Fitness claims that policies “may vary from club to club,” you should always be able to initiate the cancellation process by visiting your home gym in person or mailing it a request letter.

We’d recommend against the second option, since it could take several days, even assuming that everything goes off without a hitch. You’ll need to include your name, address, phone number, and membership number. You’ll also want to follow up to make sure the cancellation was processed.

Does Planet Fitness charge a cancellation fee?

You can expect to pay some sort of cancellation fee if you signed up for a long-term contract. In the case of a 12-month contract, the fee tends to be $58 (in the US).

Naturally, commitment-free plans have this waived. You’ll also skip the fee if you paid for whole year at a discount, but you can’t get a refund on unused time.

Can I pause my Planet Fitness membership?

Potentially, but not necessarily. You’ll have to check with your home gym. If it is an option, they should let you freeze your membership for up to 3 months for medical reasons. After that, dues will kick in again.
