If you’re using Photoshop for personal or professional design work, custom fonts can be an overlooked option — they help distinguish your material from the million other people using stock options like Impact or Times New Roman. Below, we’ll help you add new fonts to Photoshop for Windows and Mac.

QUICK ANSWER

To add new fonts to Photoshop, download OTF or TTF files to your desktop. With Windows, just right-click on each font file then click Install. With Macs, double-click a file to open the Font Box app then choose Install Font.

All versions of Photoshop support two font formats: OpenType (OTF) and TrueType (TTF). Thankfully, both of those are widely used, and it’s often possible to download fonts for free. Be aware that if you’re using a font in a commercial project, you may need a paid license unless it’s specifically labeled under an open one.

With Windows, follow these steps to add a font:

  • Find and download the font file to your computer. Creative Cloud subscriptions come with Adobe Fonts access, but there are many other repositories out there, such as Google Fonts.
  • Right-click on the file and choose Install.
  • To check that the font is working, open Photoshop, select the Horizontal Text tool, then find the font in the appropriate drop-down menu (near the top of the screen). You might also want to type some sample text to make sure it looks right.

  • Click Install Font.
