Google News & Weather app back from the dead, gets major update

The Google News & Weather app was originally part of the Google experience, but after Android 2.3 it pretty much was neglected. Now the app is back with a brand new update!
August 26, 2014

Here’s something you don’t see everyday, Google is apparently rolling out a pretty significant update for the Google News & Weather app. What’s that you ask? We don’t blame you if you’ve forgotten all about the old-school news and weather app, which Google has pretty much neglected ever since moving past Android 2.3. In fact, unless you have a Nexus or other near-stock-Android device, odds are the News & Weather app isn’t even on your current device.

The new update to version 2.0 not only marks the app’s first time being available on Google Play, it also brings with it a brand new card-style layout that much better fits the modern look of Android. As always, there are different versions of the content for various countries. You can also change the editions and sections you are subscribed to through the settings menu. As for the weather aspect? You can optionally turn on a widget that will appear at the top of the main view and will show weather details based on your current location.

To get in on the latest update for the News & Weather app, you’ll want to head on over to Google Play. Keep in mind that this update still isn’t ready for everyone just yet, so don’t be shocked if it says your device is “incompatible” right now. When in doubt, you can always check back again in a few hours. Or for those that don’t like waiting, you can grab the APK here.
