Hangouts updated for phone calls

It’s Wednesday and that typically means at least a few Google apps will end up being updated. Today’s no exception, as Google Hangouts v2.1.223 is now beginning to roll out. As you might guess by its version number, this isn’t exactly a major update, but it is more than just bug fixes.

First, there’s the ability to set custom sounds for messages and Hangout calls. This is extremely useful, and something that you’ll find in many 3rd party messaging apps. Aside from the new custom tone options, Google has also added an SMS block list. While you’ve always been able to block SMS contacts, the new list gives you a unified place to see who is blocked and makes it easy to unblock people if you so choose.

That seems to be everything, though there might be at least a few other minor changes hiding within, as well as a host of bug fixes. As is typical, the rollout will occur in stages, so it could be days or more before you have the opportunity to pick up the app update through Google Play. The good news is that you can always manually install the APK by downloading it from here.

For those that have already updated to the latest version of Hangouts, any other changes that you have run into besides those mentioned above? Please let your fellow readers know in the comments below!
