Leaker tells us what to expect from Galaxy Z Fold 3 under-display selfie camera

The real question is just how far behind Samsung's first under-display selfie camera is compared to normal shooters.

TL;DR
  • A tipster has claimed that the Galaxy Z Fold 3’s under-display camera “is not bad.”
  • The leaker further alleges that this camera still doesn’t reach the level of traditional selfie cameras.
  • This claim comes after another source previously claimed that the Z Fold 3’s selfie camera will be good.

We’ve known for a while now that the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 will have an under-display selfie camera, owing to numerous leaks. But image quality is another big question, and it looks like a frequent tipster has given us an idea of what to expect.

Social media leaker Ice Universe alleges that the Galaxy Z Fold 3’s under-display camera uses AI algorithms to improve images, claiming that picture quality “is not bad” as a result. The tipster adds that the camera still doesn’t reach the level of conventional selfie cameras but believes it’ll be the best among upcoming phones with the tech. Check out a screenshot of the tweet below.

This isn’t the first time a high-profile source has made claims about the new foldable’s selfie camera. Android Police writer Max Weinbach alleged that the Z Fold 3’s under-display camera “will be good” earlier this year.

Samsung wouldn’t be the first company to offer an under-display selfie camera, as the ZTE Axon 20 offered this feature late last year. But we thought selfies taken with the ZTE device all exhibited a beauty filter-like glow, as if the camera lens was smudged. So as long as Samsung steers clear of this effect, it should be an improvement over the first device with an under-display selfie camera at the very least. There’s more to a decent under-display selfie camera than avoiding the “smudged” look though.

Another major challenge for the tech is mixed-lighting or low-light situations, as the screen above the camera blocks plenty of light from reaching the sensor. This is probably the biggest hurdle for manufacturers to overcome, so we’ll be interested to see how the Z Fold 3’s camera fares in these scenarios.
