TL;DR
  • Samsung is pushing out a small update for the Galaxy S6.
  • The update has been discovered on the S6, S6 Edge, and S6 Edge Plus in Belgium and the Netherlands.
  • The update says it brings stability improvements, bug fixes, new and/or improved features, and performance enhancements.

The Samsung Galaxy S6 launched all the way back in early 2015. Seven years is quite old for a smartphone, but apparently not too old for a new update in Samsung’s eyes.

According to Galaxy Club, some Galaxy S6 owners in the Netherlands and Belgium are seeing updates on their devices. It appears that in the Netherlands, Galaxy S6, S6 Edge, and S6 Edge Plus handsets — bought from Vodafone — are getting firmware versions G920FXXU6EVG1, G925FXXU6EVG3, and G928FXXU5CVG3, respectively. As for Belgium, owners of unlocked S6 and S6 Edge Plus devices have received an update as well.

Last month, we reported on Samsung releasing an update for Galaxy S7 and S8 models that addressed GPS issues. Although GPS isn’t mentioned in the Galaxy S6 software update details, it does mention stability improvements, bug fixes, new and/or improved features, and performance enhancements. In addition, the size of the Galaxy S6 update comes in at 13MB, which is much smaller than the updates that rolled out for the S7 (31MB) and S8 (420MB).

It’s unclear what is all included in the S6 update, but it’s possible it could also just be improvements for the device’s GPS. It’s also possible the update could find its way to other countries. Unfortunately, also like with the S7 and S8, this update won’t be coming with a security patch.

While this update is a bit of a surprise, it seems to continue a trend Samsung has been following recently. In addition to these updates, Samsung also released updates to the Galaxy A7, S5 Neo, S10e, and Note 10 not too long ago.
