Samsung Galaxy S5 takes the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge

Samsung UK has now created a video showing the Galaxy S5 taking the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge.
August 22, 2014

We’ve seen quite a few tech celebrities jump in and take part of the Ice Bucket Challenge, which is a special fundraiser designed to raise money to fight ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis). Some of the big whigs in the mobile world include T-Mobile’s CEO  and AT&T’s CEO, but now it seems that the Samsung Galaxy S5 is getting in on the action as well. Yes, really.

In a new video (commercial?), the Galaxy S5 takes the Ice Bucket Challenge, nominating the HTC One M8, iPhone 5S and Lumia 930 to jump in as well. Alongside the vid, Samsung Mobile UK also made a donation to the MND Association. While it’s nice to see companies donating to good causes, it’s hard not to get a bit of a bad taste in your mouth after watching the GS5’s challenge video.

Any time a company turns a charity into an advertisement designed to bring the attention to their products, it’s hard not to be a little outraged. Of course, sometimes these commercials are well executed and end up not only helping promote the product, but doing great things for a good cause as well. The problem here is that the ad could have been less of a marketing gimmick and more of a genuine pledge of support if Samsung had merely changed a few things like asking folks to jump in and donate, or if they had an actual Samsung exec do the challenge — even if while still holding the GS5.

Still, we doubt ALS researchers will complain, as money for the cause is still money for the cause, regardless of whether the company doing the gifting has ulterior motive. What do you think, like Samsung’s GS5 challenge video or feel that they should have executed it a bit more tastefully?
