Samsung Galaxy Gear receives a $120 discount in India, rumored global price cut in the pipeline

If you’ve been on the fence about purchasing the rather expensive Galaxy Gear, then here’s some good news – Samsung has cut the cost of its smartwatch in India. The South Korean tech giant has slashed the retail price of the Galaxy Gear to Rs.15,290 (around $244), that works out at a Rs.7,000 (~ $120) price cut.
Don’t fret about missing out if you happen to live elsewhere in the world, rumor has it that similar discounts are expected to take effect around the rest of the globe in the coming weeks, although nothing has been officially confirmed by Samsung at this point. DailyTech is suggesting that US prices could fall to around $210 – $220, and European products would therefore be priced at €210 accordingly. If true, this would make Samsung’s smartwatch much more competitive with the sub $199 Sony Smart Watch 2. It’s also possible that this price cut could conveniently land with the expected launch of Samsung’s Galaxy Gear 2 at this month’s Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.
For the sake of comparison, Samsung originally released the Galaxy Gear at $300 for the USA, €300 in Europe, and Rs. 22,290 ($356) in India, so the price cut is set to be rather significant.
Are you already enjoying your Galaxy Gear? If not, would a $100 price cut be enough to tempt you, or are smartwatches still far too expensive for a smartphone accessory?
