Foursquare for Android update improves discovery of nearby points of interest

The busy folks developing the Forsquare location-based social network has released yet another update that helps users stumble upon interesting places nearby.
February 13, 2013

Only a few days have passed since Foursquare refreshed its app for Android, bringing in NFC Beam support and smoother scrolling speed. That has not stopped the busy folks developing the location-based social network from quickly releasing another update that helps users stumble upon interesting places nearby.

With the update now available for download on the Play Store, there are three changes that are most prominent in the update:

  • The Explore feature is now located at the top of the home screen, right beside the notification button. Users can quickly tap on the search bar and enter keywords like “nachos” and “Mexican.” Alternately, the app also lets people browse categories or simply choose the “Best Nearby” selection to highlight the most interesting locations in the proximate area.
  • The home screen also displays a map right beneath the Explore search bar that, when tapped, expands and displays friends who are checked in nearby, as well as places that the app reckons the user will like.
  • In place of the old three tabs at the bottom of the screen, the profile, to-do lists, settings and other essentials are now hidden in a drawer that slides in from the left.
