We’ve seen California-based Ematic release a number of decent budget-friendly Android tablets in the past, but the company still seems unable to break the barriers of anonymity and become a mainstream player.

The last Ematic gadget we spotted was the eGlide Pro X 9.7-incher, a tab running Android 4.0 and featuring HDMI output, but also a pretty modest 800 x 480 pix res display. Now there’s a new member of the family ready to see the light of day, and, like its forefathers, it has some off-putting specs that affect its appeal.

The EXP8 is marketed as a “value tablet”, but, at $179.99 it’s starting to look not that cheap, considering the direction the market is heading. Still, this is a 9.7-inch tab, and not a 7-incher like the Google Nexus 7 or the Kindle Fires; if you want the extra screen real estate, you naturally have to pay more.

The IPS capacitive multi-touch screen comes with a 1024 x 768 pixels resolution, which is not exactly the standard for 10-inchers these days, but it is still a significant evolution over the eGlide Pro X.

The EXP8 is powered by a 1.2 GHz ARM Cortex A8 processor (most likely single-core), so compulsive Android gamers might really struggle with this tablet. The rest of the features are not that bad and include 1 GB of RAM, a 400 Mhz GPU, 8 GB of internal memory, 5 GB of free cloud storage, microSD support, HDMI, USB 2.0, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, 3-axis gyroscope, accelerometer, dual cameras, and Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich.

Oddly enough, the cameras are not detailed (other than being called “high-resolution), so there’s a good chance you’ll only get a 2 MP rear-facing shooter and an 0.3 MP front-facing webcam, at best. The battery’s capacity is also kept under wraps, so don’t expect anything special in that department either.

Another disappointment is in the software department, where it seems that Ematic was unable or unwilling to pack the tab with full Google Play access. Instead, you get a bunch of pre-loaded apps (read: bloatware), and access to something called the Ematic App Shop. Not cool, guys, not cool at all!

If you’re willing to overlook this major downside, you might get some comfort out of the fact that the EXP8 looks rather stylish and elegant. The slate is available in black, gold and copper, and measures 0.46 inches in thickness. The tab’s weight is not mentioned per se, but based on the 2.1 pound shipping weight, it should be pretty slim.

Ematic’s EXP8 is already available for sale at Walmart.com. Anyone thinking of picking one up? Why? Why not?
