I’ve got custom ROM’s on the brain these days. Ask anyone who’s ever successfully rooted their device, and put on Cynanogen Mod on their Android tablet or smartphone, and they will tell you it has breathed incredible new life into their device, and given them full control over virtually every aspect of it. It might sound complicated, but in reality, it’s actually as simple as a bit of research and few clicks.

While the Asus Eee Pad Transformer has already received the Honeycomb 3.1 update, with all the refinements and improvements that it brings, Acer Iconia Tab A500 owners have been left out in the cold, told to wait until July 5.

XDA Forums senior member OP went ahead and built his own custom ROM, which is, as he says, is “essentially a pruned-stock standard Acer 3.1 with only the barest minimal features to maintain speed and stability of the system.” He’s also sharing his work with the modding community so we can expect to see cool custom animations, and skins coming soon too.

So, Acer Iconia Tab A500 users – you no longer have to wait until July 5 or later to to the official Android 3.1 update! Furthermore, the official date is only for Europe and Japan, and there still is no official date for it in the US, nor in Canada. An official Android 3.1 build was leaked in China a few days ago, and like most things Android, quickly found its way to the XDA forums where various veteran modders have created their own custom Android 3.1 ROMS like HoneyVillian and Minimalist 3.1. No worries either, as it checks out as being official with multi-language support and packing Google apps, among other goodies.

You know the custom modding scene for Android 3.0+ tablets is about to explode right? Anyone going to give them a try?
