7fon is a developer on Google Play with several wallpaper apps. The developer’s flagship app, linked here, has a bunch of wallpapers across various categories like most large wallpaper apps. Additionally, the developer has specific wallpaper apps for dogs, cats, AMOLED displays, seasons, and space. Most of those apps have photography. You get 120,000 wallpapers, a decent search, and 65 categories in the main app. Obviously, the more specialized apps have fewer offerings. You should be able to find some good stuff in this collection, especially if you really like winter, cats, or dogs.

Let’s start with an obvious one first. Google Search is usually the go-to method for finding a specific type of wallpaper. That’s usually because it works and it shows tons of websites instead of a single one like most apps. You can also add parameters to the search to ensure you find the type and resolution you want. It’s a little bit unpredictable, but Google Search helps get you in the right direction at least. Plus, it’s free and it probably came with your phone anyway. You might as well use it!

Reddit and Imgur

Price: Free / $3.99 per month / $29.99 per year

Reddit is another excellent spot for photography backgrounds and wallpapers. There are a host of photography subreddits. Most of them have tons of photographs to choose from. You simply download and apply them to your home screen to make them your background. Some subreddits we recommend are r/itookapicture, r/photocritique, r/astrophotography, and r/earthporn. There are many, many others as well. Reddit is free to use. There is an optional Reddit Gold subscription that removes ads and adds some additional features.

NASA’s official app is an excellent source for wallpapers if you like space images. The app has a bunch of information about NASA, space, and all of that stuff. You can also watch various video content from the agency. However, for this list, the star players are the 16,000 images taken by various satellites and the ISS with more coming in every day. It’s not landscape or cityscape photography. However, these are photographs of space and all of its various secrets and designs. Many of them are rather high resolution as well. This should work for anybody looking for legitimate space photographs for use as a background. It’s also entirely free with no in-app purchases.

Walli is one of the newer photography background apps. This one has a variety of categories aside from just photography, but it does also have photography. Artists get credit for their contributions here. It’s not much but it’s cool to see apps doing that. It is an app run predominately by ads, after all, and they don’t pay much. In any case, the UI is clean and the selections are above average. Plus, the photography is usually high enough resolution for basically any mobile phone screen. This one is surprisingly good.

Wallpapers by Google

Wallpapers by Google - one of the best photography wallpaper apps for android

Wallpapers is Google’s wallpaper app. The selection isn’t as impressively massive as some others. However, almost every wallpaper here is a photograph of something. They’re usually Google Earth shots of things like coastlines or landscapes. However, there is the occasional cityscape photo in there as well. This is a good spot to shop around for some decent wallpapers. However, it’s definitely a lot smaller in scope than most of its competitors. This one is entirely free with no ads, though, and that’s always nice too.

The app sources Unsplash for its wallpapers and is quite open about it.

That’s about all the app does and it works as advertised. Users can change the app to only set wallpapers while the device is charging and on WiFi if they want to save battery and data. Otherwise, the photos seem to be high resolution and have a good variety to them. The premium version also adds some additional features if you’re interested.

Wonderwall is an excellent wallpaper app. This one has only photography backgrounds. They are not required to use any parts of the app. Also, the video below doesn’t have a thumbnail, but it’s an actual demo of the app.
