Horror wasn’t the best genre for mobile gaming just a few short years ago. However, the genre experienced a renaissance of sorts in the last few years, and it’s gotten a lot better. Horror games can use elements from a lot of other genres. It seems many mobile ones include elements of adventure, action, shooter (FPS), and arcade. We’ve come a long way from the jump scares of the Five Nights at Freddy’s series. Here are the best horror games for Android.

We’d also like to give an honorable mention to Oxenfree (Google Play) along with The Walking Dead visual novel series originally by Telltale Games (Google Play). They are delightful horror games, but they haven’t seen Google Play updates in a few years. Unkilled and Dead Trigger 2 by Madfinger Games are also quite nice if you like zombie shooters.

The best horror games for Android

Dead by Daylight Mobile

Price: Free to play

Dead by Daylight Mobile is a surprisingly fun game. It’s an asymmetrical PvP game where four players duke it out with a single player. The solo player is a monster with several special abilities to give them an edge over their opponents. The game gets consistent updates with balance changes and such so nothing stays the same for too long. The movement controls and mechanics are solid as well. The game suffers from the occasional server issue and it may run poorly on old or low end devices so beware of that.

Dead Effect 2

Price: Free to play

Dead Effect 2 is a creepy sci-fi shooter. You play the role of one of three characters. Your goal is to level up, find new weapons, and defeat the bad guys. It features tons of alien bad guys, lots of dark corridors, and a 20-hour campaign mode to play through. The graphics are pretty good on their own. However, they do get a boost if you’re using an NVIDIA Shield device. It’s not typically what you’d think of when it comes to horror games. However, it’s about as close to a horror shooter as it gets on mobile.

Distraint: Deluxe Edition

Price: Free / Up to $4.49

Distraint is one of the newer horror games. It features hand-drawn graphics and a simple premise. The controls are very simple and you should be able to learn them quickly. It doesn’t typically rely on classic horror elements like jump scares. Instead, it tries to creep you out with its storyline. In fact, it bills itself as a psychological horror game. It’s a bit short and you should finish the game in a few hours. The Deluxe Edition is a bit more expensive than the normal version, but it includes a bunch of extra stuff. Distraint: Deluxe Edition is also free on Google Play Pass if you use it.

Eyes

Price: Free / Up to $4.99

Eyes is a decent overall horror escape game. You break into a mansion to explore it and end up getting chased by a monster. The game includes multiple levels to unlock, a couple of game modes, offline support, and global leaderboards via Google Play Games. The controls and graphics are quite nice and everything played fine. We didn’t find it overly scary but the atmosphere is dark and creepy so it’s a fun play overall. Eyes is also free via Google Play Pass if you have it.

Five Nights at Freddy’s series

Price: $2.99 each

The Five Nights at Freddy’s titles are a series of highly popular horror games. They rely on the classic jump scare. Your job is to sit somewhere and keep an eye out for living robots. They are, of course, trying to kill you. You win the game if you can survive. There is also a healthy amount of lore and story. These games have quite the following on YouTube as well so there is a bunch of content to watch there. There are several games in total to play through. The mechanics vary between the games. However, the core premise remains the same. Each game is $2.99. The series has a loyal following, even if the games aren’t the biggest deal like they used to be.

Fran Bow series

Price: $1.96

Fran Bow is another series of horror games. Each game is a different chapter in the storyline. Unlike many games that package the whole series in a single title, Fran Bow breaks the mold by making each chapter its own downloadable game. It’s a puzzle game where you must self-administer medication to go into an alternate world. The storyline is excessively creepy. It’s a decent series overall. Each game in the series will run you $1.96 with no in-app purchases or ads to bother you.

Granny

Price: Free

Granny is a short and sweet indie horror game. The premise is pretty simple. Granny keeps you locked in her house and you have to escape. Granny can hear everything you do, so whenever you cause enough of a racket, you have to hide from her to keep from being caught. It’s definitely not a new premise, but it plays well, especially for a free game. It’s nice for horror fans on a budget, but it is rather short, so don’t expect too much.

Into the Dead 2

Price: Free to play

Into the Dead 2 is the latest in a popular series of horror games. It’s an infinite runner. Your goal is to survive for as long as possible. The game also includes a story mode with multiple endings, weapon and ammo perks, and more. The game also includes more game play mechanics than its first iteration. Thus, it’s the one we’d recommend first. The first Into the Dead is still pretty good, though. Both horror games are freemium.

Thimbleweed Park

Price: $9.99

Thimbleweed Park is a Noir thriller game with horror elements. Thimbleweed Park has 80 crazy residents and you have a dead body to deal with. There are all kinds of weird happenings around the town and your job is to find answers. There are five playable characters, a bunch of jokes, two difficulty levels, a hint system, and more. This one isn’t necessarily scary, but it has a lot of the same elements as horror games. Think of it like a Bruce Campbell movie. It’s not scary, but you still watch them during Halloween, right? Thimbleweed Park is the same way and it’s also free via Google Play Pass.

Slayaway Camp and Friday the 13th

Price: Free

Slayaway Camp and Friday the 13th are two horror, puzzle, gore games from Blue Wizard Digital. They have very similar graphics and controls. You solve puzzles, kill things, and see lots and lots of blood. You do have to enable gore mode, though. Slayaway Camp includes 140 levels and Friday the 13th includes over 100. That should be more than enough to keep you going for a while. These are easily among the best mobile horror games ever made. Slayaway Camp costs a cool $2.99. Friday the 13th is free to download with in-app purchases up to $9.99.

The developer also released a third game. It’s called Slashy Camp, and it’s an endless runner similar to games like Crossy Road, but with the kind of horror and gore you would expect from this developer. It’s not quite as horror-focused as the others, but it’s still pretty decent.
