We will never know when disaster will strike, so it is always important to be alert and ready. There are a lot of tips and drills that you can practice and study, but did you know that there are also Android apps which can help you during emergencies and disasters? There are quite a number of apps of this sort in the Google Play Store which are just taken for granted. It’s time you check them out. Who knows? They might save your life during those days when earthquakes, tsunamis, storms and other calamities strike all of a sudden and without warning. Here’s a list of the best Android apps for emergencies and disasters.

Communication is very important during emergencies. We always want to make sure that all the members of the family are safe or it could be the other way around. Life360 Family Messenger can help you in these kinds of scenarios. It allows you to communicate with your Family members through a private FamilyChannel where you can send messages.

The great thing about using this app is that each message will allow you to see the location of that family member. Using this app will not cost you a dime because it’s free in the Google Play Store and sending text messages is also free. You also get to access the Life360 suite of family safety services.

During a large disaster, or even if there’s just a storm, we all want to make sure that our family and friends are safe. You can always check on them by calling them, but if the communication systems fail, we are left with the option to wait for official reports. Life360 Family Locator is the app that you need for this kind of situation. You will be able to know where the exact location of your family members is,  thanks to GPS, Wi-Fi, and cell triangulation location technology.

In cases like being trapped in a building, you can immediately ask for help by using the Panic Alarm. It will send an email, text message, or even call everyone in your contact list with the GPS coordinates of your location. In case of emergencies, you can use Life 360 Family Locator to find the nearest hospital, fire station and police station in your area.

Disasters or emergencies often mean that someone is injured. It’s a good thing if the rescue unit is just a block away from your location, but if you are in the middle of nowhere and a person close to you is injured, he or she needs to be given first aid. No worries if you’ve got somebody who knows a lot about first aid, but if you are the only one around, it’s up to you.

It can be tough dealing with kids or teenagers who want to always go out and have fun without thinking how worried their parents get when they are out of their parents’ sight. It’s okay if you have kids who always tell you where they are. On the other hand, if you have kids who don’t even reply to text messages, it could mean nights of sleeping late, waiting up for your brats. This can even be worse if there are disasters, like an earthquake.

GPS Tracking Pro is the answer to your problem. It allows you to use your phone as a GPS tracker so that you will know exactly where your children are. It also alerts you if one of your family members is in trouble. With this app, you just have to relax and let it inform you where the members of your family have gone off to.

During large disasters like storms and earthquakes, the communication lines and power lines are usually affected. You won’t be able to make some calls or send text messages to your family. The bad thing is that you will not know what is happening around you because you don’t have access to news updates. Police Scanner can be useful in these kinds of situations.

It allows you to access over 2,500 radio feeds through 3G or Wi-Fi. You can find channels close to your location with GPS or through 3G triangulation technology. You don’t have to wait for the authorities to inform you about what’s happening around you because you can just listen to the news feeds.

In case of an emergency, you can have ICE on your phone to help you out. This app doesn’t have lots of features packed in it to brag about, but it can surely come in handy during emergency situations. What ICE can do for you is that if someone finds you unconscious (or worse, dead), the app gives her or him the necessary information like which person to call. This information is displayed in the app and can be easily accessed for the rescuer’s convenience.

If you are a firefighter, Dangerous Goods Manual will surely come in handy for you. It can guide you on how to respond to fire alarms involving establishments that house dangerous chemicals. You can find the U.N. number of the hazardous substance and Emergency Response Intervention Cards which will guide you on how to deal with the situation. Aside from that, the app also provides information on things such as hazard identification numbers, Hazchem Emergency Action Codes, Packaging groups, Transport category, and tunnel codes. Once you download this app, you can access all this information even without an Internet connection.

If you want to be updated about all the disasters happening around the globe then Disaster Alert can help. This app allows you to view active hazards such as tsunamis, earthquakes, volcanic activity, storms, floods, and more on a map. You can also view these hazards in an alert list. The app will send you updates every five minutes and you can also get more information about a certain hazard. You just have to choose a preferred time zone and the app will do the rest for you.

Color Flashlight, unlike the other apps mentioned above, helps by simply providing you with a flashlight during emergencies. When you use this app, you will be able to maximize the screen brightness of your phone. You won’t need to rummage for a flashlight! Another useful feature of this app is that you can set it so that your phone will simulate the light of a police car. If you are stuck somewhere dark where no one can hear you, you can still relay your message. The app has a feature where you can display your personal message in the dark and all you have to do is type in your message.

It can teach you how to make fire, how to make a shelter, which plants can be eaten, and all the stuff necessary for survival.
