American Sign Language (ASL) is the main language of the Deaf community in many countries around the world. Its siblings, PSE and SEE, are also popular. We wish we could say that there are plenty of apps for learning ASL. Unfortunately, that isn’t the case. It’s a visual language and that means any good app needs tons of images or video to make it work properly. We only recommend apps as a supplementary learning source. You will learn more in a physical classroom at a faster pace. However, there are a few apps that can help teach you ASL. Here are the best American Sign Language apps for Android!

Memrise

Price: Free / $9 per month / $59.99 per year

Memrise is one of the most popular language-learning apps on Google Play. It also supports ASL. We’re not sure exactly how much the app teaches. However, from what we tested, you can easily learn the basics. The app features games, images, and video content for ASL learning. Additionally, you get offline support, daily goals, and more. This one is mostly for spoken language. However, it has some solid American Sign Language content as well.

Signing Exact English

Price: $8.25

Signing Exact English is an older app. However, it has everything you need to learn. It comes with a dictionary of over 4,000 signs. The UI is old, but simple and easy to use. You also get numbers, affixes, and the alphabet. We couldn’t find any other app that works as well as this one does. However, we are concerned that its last update was 2016. We recommend approaching with caution and getting a refund if you’re dissatisfied. The app worked pretty well for us, though.

SignSchool

Price: Free

SignSchool is one of the newer American Sign Language apps. The website is actually an outstanding resource for ASL learning. The app needs work, but it has potential. You get a large dictionary of signs along with categories, games, and a random sign generator for practice. Unfortunately, the UI is a little quirky at the moment. However, a few maintenance updates should fix that right away. This is a good one, even if it has its issues. It’s also entirely free.

The ASL App

Price: Free / Up to $9.99

The ASL App is another decent app with the basics. It comes with a library of over 1,500 signs with video of each sign. It also teaches the alphabet, numbers, universal gestures, exercises for faster and better hand shapes, and more. Much of the content is free. You can buy additional sign packs as in-app purchases. They’re around $0.99 each or $9.99 for the full bundle. At least it’s not a subscription, right? This is another excellent app for beginners.

YouTube

Price: Free / $12.99 per month

YouTube is a surprisingly good platform for learning ASL. It’s a video platform and ASL is a visual language. The two go hand in hand. There are a variety of excellent channels that teach American Sign Language, including Katie Marie, Bill Vicars, and tons of tutorials and one-off videos from other creators. This is the one we would recommend first with Memrise being a close second. Again, we still recommend an actual course or class for this. However, you can get surprisingly far with YouTube. The platform is free with ads. Its premium subscription removes advertising.
