Just how fast is Apple’s new A14 Bionic chip? That’s the question our own Gary Sims tries to answer definitively with his latest Speed Test G challenge, pitting the iPhone 12 against the OnePlus 8T and its Snapdragon 865 chipset.

Spoiler warning: the iPhone 12 wins the contest convincingly, finishing the test suite in just 63 seconds to the OnePlus 8T’s time of 78.8 seconds. The two phones were somewhat close through the CPU portion of the benchmark, but then the iPhone pulled ahead as it got into the mixed and GPU sections and never looked back. The completion times don’t tell the full story either. The iPhone 12 put up much better frame rates in Unity and the blur particle test. You’ll want to watch the video to see just how much better the iPhone performs in those applications.

After losing so decisively to the iPhone 12, you might think the OnePlus 8T is a slouch, but that’s not actually the case. A time of 78.8 seconds puts it in the top echelon of Android devices we’ve put through our Speed Test G testing. As a 7nm chip, the 8T’s Snapdragon 865 was always going to have a hard time against the 5nm A14 and the approximately extra 1.5 billion transistors it has in its favor. It will be interesting to revisit this result once Qualcomm’s new flagship SoC starts making its way into next year’s high-end phones.
