A couple of days ago, we wrote an article about Google Stadia support coming to Android TV after Google showcased the platform’s road map at IBC. Now, we can verify another piece of information listed on that road map: Android 10 will come to Android TV in 2019.

According to 9to5 Google, Google confirmed that Android 10 is on track to be released for Android TV by the end of the year. Apparently, the timeline is pretty flexible, but Google is still planning on rolling the update out in the coming months.

Google will release this update alongside a piece of developer hardware just like it did with Android Pie. Last year, Google released the ADT-2 developer device when Pie launched. This year, Google will release an updated ADT-3 developer device in Q4 of this year.

Google also mentioned that new Android TV devices would launch in the first half of 2020. We don’t know any more details about these devices or whether they will be consumer products or not.

Along with the Android 10 update comes a new manufacturer upgrade policy. Previously, Google required Android TV device makers like Nvidia to support three major platform updates. This new policy would require manufacturers to provide only two.

Though this is good for companies who make Android TV devices, I don’t think this is great for consumers. Even though more companies might be willing to make their own Android TV devices, people will need to buy new devices more often to stay up to date.

Other than that, it is good to see that Android TV should receive the Android 10 update soon. Hopefully, Google has more Android TV news to release by the end of the year as well.
