TL;DR
  • The second Android P developer preview’s Markup is now available for older devices as an unofficial port.
  • Markup is Android P’s screenshot editing tool that lets you crop and draw on screenshots.
  • You do not need to root your device to download and install the Markup port.

Even though several Android versions before it let you take screenshots, Android P is the first to offer a native screenshot editing tool in the form of Markup. With Android P on its second developer preview, some amazing soul on XDA Developers decided to backport the latest version of the screenshot editing tool for other Android devices.

An older version of Markup is still available, but this updated port includes two new features.

For one, the editing tools bar at the bottom no longer overlaps the screenshot and now appears below the screenshot. Markup also features a share button next to the save button on the top right of the editing window. Previously, the Share button showed up next to the Edit button in the screenshot notification.

In terms of functionality, Markup lets you crop and draw over screenshots, but nothing more. If you need features like a scrolling screenshot, filters, text, and the ability to rotate, you will still need to look elsewhere.

Even so, we still have a few months to go until Android P’s stable release. There remains plenty of time for Google to further augment Markup with additional features.

If you want to download the new Markup port for your Android device, you can click this link that will take you to the specific forum post. From there, scroll down until you see the Markup DP2 APK attachment and download it onto your device.

Keep in mind that the port will only work on devices with ARM64 chipsets. Also, you must tap the Share button when you take a screenshot and then select Markup if you want to make some edits.
