In addition to the Nexus One announcement, Goggle also introduced Android 2.1 today at its Android press event. The next iteration of Android features the Facebook integration and Google Maps turn-by-turn navigation found on Android 2.0 but adds the following:

  • five homescreen panels
  • a news and weather widget
  • Live Wallpapers
  • 3D app launcher
  • improved gallery with background sync to Picasa Web albums
  • voice enabled command/dictation that works with every text field in the device

The Nexus One will be the first Android phone to sport Android 2.1 but is not exclusive to this device. Other devices will receive an Android 2.1 update but the time frame was not revealed and is most likely based upon each individual carrier’s preferences. Google wrapped up their press event with  a brief preview of Google Earth for Android. This virtual globe application will feature pan, zoom, and voice enabled Map search and is expected to launch soon. Sweet!
