AMD announces world’s first 7nm laptop processor, Ryzen 7 4800U

We’re at CES 2020, and announcements are coming in fast. On the PC processor front, AMD shot the first fires in its latest melee with Intel with the AMD Ryzen 4000 Series Mobile.

According to the company’s CEO, Lisa Su, this is the world’s first 7nm processor designed for mobile form factors such as laptops – it’s also a step ahead Intel’s latest Ice Lake chips, offering a 4% improvement in single-thread processing, a whopping 90% jump in multi-thread processing, and 28% in graphics performance. The comparison pitches AMD’s brand-new Ryzen 7 4800U against Intel’s Core i7-1065G7, which is based on a 10nm process.

Thanks to the jump to 7nm, the new Ryzen 7 4800U is also twice as power-efficient as the previous second-generation Ryzen series (12nm), meaning laptops that use it will be able to run for longer.

The third-gen Ryzen 4000 series will be available in U (ultrathin), H (gamers/creators), and Pro series (ultrathin business) configurations.

One of the first systems using the new chip from AMD is the Lenovo Yoga Slim 7. AMD promised a dozen other systems from various OEMs coming in Q1 and over 100 by the end of the year,

In addition to the new Ryzen mobile generation, AMD also revealed additions to its graphics lineup. The new 7nm Radeon RX5600XT is said to beat NVIDIA’s GTX 1660 TI by quite a margin – sales start on January 21, from $279. Laptop-focused variations will also be made available.

Meanwhile, AMD claims its new Ryzen 7 4800h graphics chip for laptops is faster than a desktop class equivalent. This chip will be found in the ASUS Zephyrus G14 – a sleek gaming laptop that’s less than 18mm thick and weighs 3.5 pounds. The Zephyrus G14 will be available from February.

Intel won’t take any of this standing – the chip giant is due to show its new stuff at CES 2020 in less than an hour, so stay tuned.
