Alcatel introduces the world’s latest slimmest smartphone, the One Touch Idol Ultra
Today at CES, Alcatel unveiled a number of new devices including the Evo 7 and Evo 7 HD tablets and the Scribe line of 5-inch phablets led by the full HD Scribe X. The phone maker didn’t stop here though, and has also introduced what it calls “the world’s slimmest smartphone”, the One Touch Idol Ultra.
Alcatel is a brand that is relatively well known in Europe, where the French company Alcatel had a long track record of manufacturing phones. But the smartphone revolution in the mid-2000s caught the firm off guard, and the only hope of salvation was a joint venture with China’s TCL Corp. After years of reorganization, the products of this venture are now emerging, in the form of a number of competitive smartphones and tablets.
Getting back at today’s news, the Idol Ultra is just 6.45mm thick, which is 15% thinner than another one-time contender to the “world’s thinnest” title, the iPhone 5. Spec-wise, the Idol Ultra is reasonably well endowed:
- 6.45 mm thickness, 119g weight
- 4.7-inch HD (1,280 x 720) Super AMOLED (Pentile) display
- 1.2GHz dual-core CPU
- 1GB RAM
- 8MP rear/1.3MP front
- Quad-band GSM/dual-band HSPA
- Android 4.1
Unfortunately, the Alcatel One Touch Idol Ultra won’t ever be sold in the US, simply because its super-thin profile prevent it from obtaining the mandatory FCC certification. The device will be sold in China for 2,799 RMB ($449) starting this month.
Alcatel also showed off the One Touch Idol, a “fatter” version of the Idol Ultra that features 8.15mm and weighs in at a light 110g. The Idol features a 4.7-inch qHD (960 x 540) IPS display, a 1.2GHz dual-core CPU, and 512MB of RAM.
The HSPA Idol will come with a dual-SIM variant, and is likely to be picked up by at least one US carrier in the future.
