Back in MWC this year, ZTE promised to release the world first low-cost solar powered mobile phone: the Coral 200 Solar. ZTE announced that the device will go on sale in June as little as $40, which was then worth around £28 or €32. At this point there was no word on OS or hardware specifications.
Nonetheless, we liked the idea of this phone because not only can 1 hour of sunlight give you 15mins of talk-time, but it can be charged from mains as well. This is a perfect device for the energy conscientious or perhaps even the more intrepid.
Well, subsequent to MWC, in an interview with Register Hardware, ZTE have announced that they will release an Android powered device that may be solar powered. This will depend on whether “the handset’s eco-qualities, features and capabilities.” I think Google would love the idea that Android was finding its way onto devices like these.
