sony xperia z3 compact leak (3)

Sony is planning to release a new generation of its excellent Z Compact series at IFA, and now new images give us a good idea of what to expect.

Like its predecessor, the Z1 Compact (there’s no Z2 Compact), the new Xperia Z3 Compact will feature top specifications in a relatively small package, while keeping design and features similar to the top of the line Xperia Z3.

We’ve had a brief peek at the Z3 Compact before, but this set of leaked shots (via Xperia Blog) gives away a lot more about the device. The images showing the device from the side suggest the Z3 Compact will be slightly thinner than the previous generation, which was almost one centimeter thick.

We see the same rounded edges the Xperia Z3 is expected to feature, but there’s only one protective flap on the sides, hiding both the microSD and the micro USB port.

The opposite side houses Sony’s iconic silver power button, the volume rocker, and the dedicated camera shutter.

On the back (image at the top), we get a glimpse of the Xperia Z3’s 20.7MP camera and a rather large centrally positioned LED flash.

As a refresher, the Xperia Z3 Compact will feature a 4.5 or 4.6 inches display, probably of 720p resolution, a Snapdragon 801 processor, 2GB of RAM, a 20.7MP Exmor RS camera, and Android 4.4. Like all the flagship Xperias, the Z3 Compact will be water and dust resistant.

Sony has a press event for September 3 at the IFA Berlin show, where we expect to see the Xperia Z3 and Xperia Z3 Compact, alongside new models of Sony’s QX detachable lenses.

Yes please! Bring this (and/or the normal Z3, but I’d probably prefer the compact) to US carriers (Verizon for me) and I’ll almost certainly buy one.
Just needs good quality front speakers, and 32GB internal to make it about perfect. Ideally I wish it had 1080p at about 4.8″.

I’m happy with 720. You wouldn’t notice the extra pixel if you don’t compare it side by side with a higher resolution phone but you will notice the impact on battery life!

      • dextersgenius

        This.

@OP: 1080p on such a small display makes no sense. Also, remember that small body = small battery, so 720p is perfect for this phone.

You must have some bad eyes. I can most certainly notice a difference without side by side comparison between 720 and 1080 on a phone. I can notice the difference without my glasses.

          • dextersgenius

It’s not about being able to notice a difference, it’s about whether it makes an enough of a difference that it impairs or enhances your day to day usage of your phone. I still use my Nexus 4 for development stuff and honestly the sharpness of the screen looks just as good as my G2.

Awkward flash placement. Or that’s just me?

    • M3D1T8R

Right in the middle, I like it. Will make for a perfect led flashlight.

      • Christian Jocef Austria

Maybe they should place the lens in the middle too?
I wish the flash will be good this time, I hate the flash on my z1.

  • BatDroid

Its going to be 4.6″ 1080p.

Written that it is xperia z3 compact, seems legit,

  • Gamma M

My next phone, can’t wait !

  • spidermen

But wait, where is the Z2 compact? Japanese and their nomenclature: sigh:

    • Cole Raney

It is meant to release pretty much alongside the Xperia Z3, so it makes sense to borrow the name. Especially if they are only going to release the compact versions yearly.

  • Dave

    What about z ultra 2

  • Sarper

They say Z3 Compact will have 4.6-4.7 inch 1080p display Snapdragon 801 CPU and 3 GB of RAM.

  • Sarper

That flash looks ugly there. They should place it to the left of camera lens or place the camera lens to the top left corner and flash right next to it.

  • eliHd

Lot of People are gonna end up covering the flash with their fingers. What is Sony thinking!

  • Adon

No Z2 Compact? There is a Z2 Compact, its called the Z2A. its smaller than the Z2,but all the features are same. Plus more color options just like the Z1 Compact. ;-)

  • das

    720p and 801 ? PASS

  • shamatuu

was excited than it hit me. The Z4 will come with the 805 so i’ll wait for that instead.

  • Lurker

That rumored 1080p resolution will make a difference, especially if you use screen mirroring to the TV via Chromecast or its TV SideView app.

  • crutchcorn

I’m impressed. Sony is the way to go if smaller devices are your thing
